Cal Poly Seeks Volunteers for Program Aimed at Easing College Transition for Out-of-State Students
August 24, 2018
SAN LUIS OBISPO — Cal Poly’s Local Connections program is seeking local residents with a desire to support out-of-state students and provide a home-away-from-home on the Central Coast.
Originally created in 2014 by Cal Poly parents Scott and Julia Starkey, the program connects students with San Luis Obispo residents to offer a local support system as they transition to life at Cal Poly. The program also provides a meaningful way for local residents to volunteer their time, make lifelong connections with participating students, and give back to their localcommunity.
“A sponsor program gives those students who are far from home the opportunity to have a localconnection that offers some of the benefits of being close to family,” said Julia Starkey, who along with her husband serves on Cal Poly’s Student Affairs Advisory Council. “Many of these students just need a place to get away, get a home cooked meal, or simply find a little peace and comfort.”
“For out-of-state students, moving to a new area without any friends or family nearby can be very challenging, both personally and academically,” added Keith Humphrey, vice president for student affairs. “We are grateful for the local host families that have participated in past years, as they have helped bring our community and Cal Poly closer together. It's a great partnership that truly benefits the students and host families alike.”
Common activities for sponsors and students include hiking, day trips to popular Central Coast destinations, celebrating holidays together or offering students a quiet place to study.
Local Connections is accepting applications online through Sept. 30 and is currently seeking residents within the city of San Luis Obispo. For more information and to apply, visit https://localconnections.calpoly.edu/.
