AY 2021-2022 Highlights

Renovating Fremont Hall

The university continued making strides in renovating Fremont Hall, which closed in Winter 2017 following the collapse of the adjacent hillside.

In January of 2021, University Housing and Facilities Management and Development (FMD) began renovating the facility and grounds, following input from residents and staff. Facilities Management and Development also managed hillside remediation as part of the university’s efforts to reopen the residence hall.

All told, Fremont Hall is slated to reopen in Fall 2022 to house 272 first-year students within the College of Architecture and Environmental Design Residential Learning Community. The residence hall will feature an expanded kitchen that opens to the community room; centrally located laundry facilities; new window coverings, carpet, and hydration stations; new fire alarm and fire suppression systems; exterior wireless access points; new roofing; and improvements to outdoor study and recreational spaces.

Working Toward the Future of Campus Housing

University Housing completed the Housing Future Plan in the spring of 2022, which details the strategy for developing new campus housing and renovating existing facilities to provide a residential experience that supports student success and retention. It addresses the goals of the 2035 Campus Master Plan—doubling the number of campus bedspaces by 2036—and ensures the long-term financial health of the University’s campus housing operation.

The plan identifies modifications to housing sites in the master plan based on optimal capacities and development phasing, determines levels of investment in existing residence halls, evaluates construction and operating costs to determine phasing strategies, and recommends a short- and long-term plan for housing improvements. The multi-phased plan adds 1,878 beds at the current site of the North Mountain Halls, which are set to close 2024. Renovations of existing facilities are planned for the summer months. The plan will be presented to the Housing Proposal Review Committee (HPRC) and the CSU Board of Trustees this summer.

Fostering Success Through Care and Support

University Housing launched a resident wellness plan in the fall of 2021 to support students in identifying at least one resource to support their success at Cal Poly coming through the COVID-19 pandemic.
